Like it or loathe it (not for discussion here!), we'll be officially out of the EU at 11pm tonight and into a transition phase.
As the nights start to get lighter, the mercury starts rising and we start dreaming of grand touring plans for 2020, we look at how the Brexit transition phase impacts on taking that trip across The Channel.
In a nutshell, everything will remain the same whilst in this transition period which is set to run until 31st December. The relevant points to motorbike touring in Europe look something like this...
Driving Licences - If you hold a full driving licence you will not be required to get any additional permits. Your licence WILL be valid!
Travel - Trains & Boats will continue to operate as usual. At passport control, as UK Nationals, we'll still be able to queue in areas reserve for EU arrivals.
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - These cards will still be valid and provide UK Nationals with state medical care for illness or accident. They can be used in any EU country plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland & Liechtenstein. Any additional Travel Insurance that you purchase will still be valid but ensure that you've got the correct cover for your trip and personal circumstances. Check out the RealRoads motorcycle specific travel insurance here.
Passports - As long as they're valid for the duration of your trip then you're good to go. You don't need to have 6 months left on your passport to travel to the EU.
Data Roaming - Current EU rules dictate that costs of using data whilst in the EU are the same as when you're in the UK. This will continue during the transition period.
So there you go... situation normal until the 31st December 2020. After that, who knows but we'll be sure to keep an eye on things and update the info when we know. And don't forget... drive on the right... Happy Travels!
